We were the couple. There I said it. It may sound kind of stuck up or righteous. But we were successful by society’s standards. We had(ve) two beautiful children. We had the three bedroom, two car garage home in the ‘burbs. He drove a BMW I drove a Lexus. Sick, right?
It’s going we can all agree on that. But how is it going—hot, breezy, sweet, lazy, painful, cool, flashing, sweaty, fast and crazy? The hourglass is glued to the table, the sand trickling through, going, going—gone.
“Christmas time is here…beauty everywhere…” the classic Christmas carol from a Charlie Brown Christmas always takes me back to my childhood. I remember my Grade 1 Christmas concert. It was my very first experience on a stage. My nose bled right before we walked on stage. The teacher told me it happened because I was so excited.
We sang “Oh Tannenbaum”. Our grade 1 class practiced for what seemed like months but it was probably only a week or two. I wondered why we couldn’t just sing Oh Christmas Tree instead. I mean that was the song I knew all the words to…not Oh Tannenbaum.
I asked Santa that year for a red wagon. I wanted one so bad I dreamed of it. I fantasized about putting all of my friends (stuffed animals) in it and taking them out for a walk to the park. At my age living in an apartment is kind of frowned upon. I’m too young to ‘downsize’ and I’m too old to be slumming it. I should be presiding over my large 4 bedroom estate. I should really have room for grown children to move in when their plans change at the drop of a hat. I should have bedrooms waiting for those future grandchildren.
