Finding Humor In a Hopeless Place

finding humor in a hopeless placeRhianna might have found love in a hopeless place but can you find humor?  I’m asking because humor is not only more likely than love but has the health benefits to get you through divorce.  Yes, divorce being the hopeless place.  If you are going through it now, no doubt you have days that are so low you’re not sure you can get out of bed.  Your ex is being so incredibly horrible, you don’t recognize them; you never thought raising the kids in a single parent household could be so challenging.  Where did all the good times go?  You may ask yourself. finding humor in a hopeless place

That’s where humor comes in.  There is nothing better than laughter to relieve stress.  Did you ever stop in the middle of it all and realize just how ridiculous it has become?  I certainly did, even to the point of starting to write a play. I still laugh today about not only some of the questions that were asked but in the manner that they were asked in the court room.   If you’re not there yet, trust me you will be one day.  When you come out of this tunnel we call divorce, you’ll see it a lot differently.

In the meantime, if you can’t bring yourself to find humor in your divorce right now, you’ll have to find it elsewhere.  There is plenty out there to make a person smile between social media, movies and good old television.   Here is some funny stuff to get you started on reaping those benefits.  A smile and a laugh can reduce stress, attract the opposite sex, increase blood flow to the brain, and best of all brighten a hopeless day.

Some movies to make you smile if not LOL;       finding humor in a hopeless place

“Bridesmaids”-Kirsten Wiig, need I say more?

“Sideways”- a romp through wine country with a recently divorced man and his buddy about to get married

“Uncle Buck”-classic John Candy

“Due Date”-not as stupid as it sounded, with Robert Downey and other talents

“Bridget Jones’ Diary” -the first one

“It’s Complicated”- forget about wondering how this recently divorced woman can remain so wealthy and just laugh at it’s ridiculous scenarios

“The Invention of Lying”  Ricky Gervais- a brilliant plot

T.V. Shows to make you laugh;

Parks and Recreation- the characters are so funny and loveable at the same time

30 Rock- Tina Fey as Liz Lemon is always a laugh

Hot in Cleveland- Betty White and other fabulous cast members

New Adventures of Old Christine-Julia Louis Dreyfus

Absolutely Fabulous- a Brit sit com, different from our North American humor on BBC

Whitney-starring the comedienne Whitney Cummings

Don’t Trust the B in Apt 23-a fresh sit com

Those should get you started to finding humor in a hopeless place.  And I leave you with this video to make you smile.  Please leave your comment sure to make me smile!

Fun! I wish I had had more laughter therapy during my separation and divorce 15-16 years ago. Where was “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” when I needed it?

    Nice list of coping mechanisms!

It definitely helps! The Philadelphia show is pretty funny. I love Danny Devito. Thanks for stopping by, Joe.

Love this list. I’m years past the divorce (and there definitely is light on the other side), but a good laugh is always in season!

I think my favorite funny movie is Ruthless People I know, it’s a zillion years old, but seriously?! What *are* they doing under the covers with the Dustbuster? Did love Bridesmaids and several of the others you mentioned.

Favorite funny book – just released Jenny Lawson (The Bloggess) – Let’s Pretend This Never Happened. If you don’t snort and choke with laughter, you are a cyborg.
